NSW considers Japanese hybrid train

NSW Transport Minister, John Watkins, says his Government is planning to hold discussions with the East Japan Railway Company on the operation and cost of their Kiha E200 hybrid rail car.

The $200 million, two-car Kiha E200 is equipped with a diesel engine, two electric motors under each of its cars and lithium ion batteries on the roof. Through the use of a smaller diesel engine it runs more quietly than normal trains and uses up to 20% less fuel. See this previous post for more information on the Kiha E200.
