Sydney air polluters put on notice

The New South Wales Government has announced a crackdown on major air polluters in Sydney. The Government is targeting 60-plants, including petroleum refiners, petrochemical companies and glass producers. The Minister assisting the Minister for the Environment, Verity Firth, says the Government will double the Annual Load Based Licensing fees of companies considered to be big polluters.

Just as new cars and fuels are now cleaner, industry must also lift its game for the sake of everyone who breaths in Sydney.

We’ve had significant reductions in levels of carbon dioxide, lead, sulfur dioxide and fine particles, but in order to keep this we have to keep the pressure on.

While the Government recognises that vehicles are the main contributors to NOx and volatile organic compound levels in Sydney, industry remains a significant source.

Unlike the motor vehicle industry, petroleum refiners, petrochemical companies and glass producers have failed to make sufficient progress in cutting their emissions.
