Origin Energy to generate electricity using coal seam gas

Origin Energy announced it will be proceeding with the construction of a  gas-fired power station near Braemar in the Darling Downs region of Queensland. The gas will be sourced from Origin’s extensive coal seam gas reserves at Spring Gully and the Walloons.

The power station will be capable of producing 630MW which is enough power to supply the equivalent of 400,000 Queensland homes.

Construction is expected to begin in August 2007, with full commercial operation planned for the first quarter of 2010. Importantly, particularly in the current drought climate, the power station is air cooled. It will use less than 3 per cent of the water a conventional water cooled coal-fired power station would use.
