A Boeing view on alternative aviation fuels

Boeing have recently released a paper entitled Alternate Fuels for use in Commercial Aircraft. In this paper the authors provide some insight into how Boeing thinks the changes in aviation fuel will pan out in the next 50 years. A quick synopsis follows:

Presently, it appears that an approach of using a jet fuel replacement, which may consist of a kerosene and synthetic fuel blend, will be possible for use in existing and near term aircraft. Future mid-term aircraft may use a bio-jet and synthetic fuel blend in ultra-efficient airplane designs. Future, long-term engines and aircraft in the 50-plus year horizon, may be specifically designed to use a low or zero-carbon fuel such as liquid methane or liquid hydrogen.

Read the paper for a good explanation of the pros and cons of future alternative aviation fuels.
