Victoria reports weekly greenhouse gas emissions

Now here is an initiative that if copied across all states in Australia would open the eyes of Australians to how much greenhouse gas we as a country produce. The Climate Group are displaying a Weekly Greenhouse Indicator for Victoria. This same information is published in The Age every Monday.

This week’s summary:

Victorians’ emissions from energy decreased slightly this week to 1.900 million tonnes. On Tuesday electricity demand was a record high, but blackouts meant that about 30% of demand wasn’t met for several hours. Greenhouse gas emissions from coal-fired electricity decreased by 7% or 85,000 tonnes from last week. Emissions from natural gas, which is used to generate electricity when demand is high, rose about 20% this week.

1.9 million tonnes of greenhouse gas in a week! The sooner we can produce electricity from 100% renewable sources the better. The challenge is now for other states and territories to follow suit and for all to go one step further and report their water usage.
