What do the Tesla Roadster and the Lotus Exige 265E have in common? They are both alternative fuel sports cars worthy of any motoring aficionado’s attention and they are both assembled in the Lotus factory. That’s pretty much where the similarities end.
The Tesla Roadster is a pure electric sports car that is already being sold in the US. Given its performance and the development required to reach production the USD90 000 price tag doesn’t seem at all unreasonable. However, what is interesting about Tesla is they have a grand vision for the development of a wide range of electric cars.
The Lotus on the other hand is an experimental vehicle whose supercharged and intercooled VVTL-i combustion engine has been tuned to run on E85. The result is a vehicle with a four cylinder engine with enough power to reach 100km/h in less than 4 seconds!
Both of these vehicles make alternative fuel performance sexy and remove the idea most people seem to have that alternative fuel cars can’t compete with today’s high performance petrol guzzlers.
